Maybe it was able to do so expeditiously because… it made no changes to the question from last year. For example, a medic at a bush hospital in Uganda who dreams of commercializing low-cost technologies to fight infectious diseases would likely be well served discussing his journey to HBS via this essay. In fact, I often find myself getting bored and impatient once an essay starts to cross the word mark.
Use your best judgment on who you decide to ask - there is no set formula for who should be your recommenders. In other words, this essay relies on your experience as a vehicle to communicate your values. The round 1 and round 2 deadlines are only slightly different from last year. For the second year in a row, it will only have two rounds. Your first task should be to evaluate all of the other aspects of your candidacy — what is the story your resume tells?

Your goal is not to show off your writing abilities, however, but to share your experiences so that they demonstrate who you are as a person, revealing what inspires and motivates you. So for those of you who are applying to HBS or to other schools with essay prompts that have no word limits, how long is your essay? A few possibilities: Provide context for events described in the required elements. If this experience or moment truly defines you and strikes at the essence of your being, you can discuss it and it alone. Simply stating that theme is not enough—you need to really guide your reader through the illustrative events in your life to show how and why this theme manifests. Go Harvard! Because there is no stated word count you do have the flexibility to take extra space if you are telling a compelling story that needs it.
