Students examine informational text, use an inquiry-based approach, and practice genre-specific strategies for expository writing. Using the example research paper, discuss briefly how a research paper answers a question.
The steps include: Mini-Lesson 1 day : Mini-lesson 1 helps students learn how to choose the best resources for their research. Give students a blank copy of the research paper Scaffold and explain that the procedures used in writing research papers follow each section of the scaffold. All of them had to contain their survey results, research, and emails and interviews in one form or another. Use model documents to introduce students to strong, arguable statements. Students should include the facts supporting their answer from the literature review. In the past, I stuck to the traditional paper, mostly because doing so was comfortable for me as an English teacher. The research paper scaffold is designed to be completed during seven or eight sessions over the course of four to six weeks. This section of the research paper needs to be just a few paragraphs. Reviewing 1—2 days : Students get a final look before taking their work public. By focusing on the process of writing, not just the product, you will help students write better papers and gain confidence along the way.
These students will lack confidence in their ability to produce good writing. I don't do this to scare my students away from post-secondary education. They can work in small groups to see what their peers would like to know about that matter. The Final Products I gave my students options for their final products. While the focus of the project is the creation of a research paper, the step-by-step instruction for completing the report focuses entirely on the writing process. Teaching writing should involve direct, explicit comprehension instruction, effective instructional principles embedded in content, motivation and self-directed learning, and text-based collaborative learning to improve middle school and high school literacy.
As students shared their projects and we reflected on the process together, a few things became clear to me. These students will lack confidence in their ability to produce good writing.
