I felt that of the poems that I was given to choose from these two told a tragic and effective story of what war was really like. I have chosen Dulce Et Decorum Est because it describes the struggle of a group of people who have to struggle through the most extraordinary events day in day out.

The First World War was an event that brought to many people, pain, sorrow and bitterness. Accounts of the war shows that no other war challenged existing conventions, morals and ideals in the same way as did World War. Many people touched by the terrror of the war have written pieces of literature about the massacre that was World War 1, wishing people to understand the horror and tragedy that befell those involved.

These poems both have a main subject of war. The main difference though, which leads to many other differences in the two poems are that they were written very in different centuries and times. The main similarity we have observed is that they both capture war time experiences. Both look at War as the main subject, but express very different views on it. For now, this may seem like a mistake, like this is all a mistake, and that the statement itself cannot possibly be what is meant to be written in the first sentence of this page.

But it is supposed to be there, because there it is, bold and right. What images of war do these two poems convey? The poem was written to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. Owen wrote this poem as an antiwar message describing the horrors that he went through.

The poem itself presents an a blunt impression of the world through its linking of ideas and language in its text. The poem is an anti-war poem by Wilfred Owen and makes great use of these devices. It was to show his opposition to war and to show that the war was contrary to what it was being portrayed as in Britain at the time - rightful and fitting Owen was born on the 18th March Owen experienced the war and therefore he wrote elaborate detail on life on the battlefield. Owen opens his poem with a strong simile that compares the soldiers to old people that may be hunch-backed He is recognized in English history to be the greatest writer of war.

Which may be because he was able to experience the reality of war for himself. It was during the midst of his traumatic vulnerability in the battlefield that sustained him in writing some of the greatest poems about WW1, including Dulce Et Decorum. It all started on October 21st, when he volunteered to join the war. Feeling guilty and pressured from all the propagandas, he blindly joined the battle, not knowing the horrors he was soon to face The title is part of the Latin phrase 'Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori' which means 'It is sweet and right to die for your country'.

Wilfred Owen saw the war first-hand and this poem is about a gas attack that he witnessed. Throughout this poem Owen gives the sense of anger and injustice through the use of many different poetic techniques. Wilfred Owen emphasises the condition of the men in order to show the reader the effect that the war had on the soldiers The idea of glory on the battlefield is emphasized to young, impressionable minds that fall to believe.

It was used to instill a glory and honor of war in the people going off to fight. During the World War 1 era this was the general feeling of going off to war at the beginning, it was going to be full of honor and glory. Wilfred Owen was one of the youth to get shipped off to war during WWI. Is it written by Owen, who has actually experienced being in the dreadful warzone. These poems express the truth and reality of what war really is and shows his belief in the ignorance of the people.

He gives us a clearer image. Both poems are set in the battlefield, during the period of WW Something you can never outrun or hide from, no matter how hard you try you just cannot get it out of your head. It affects your everyday life: your relationships, your actions. It is a horrendous and unescapable pain drilled into the depths of your brain and deepest crevices of your heart.

He emphasizes that war is upsetting and appalling at times. There is nothing sweet about it. He only strengthens his argument by the use of strong descriptive words and vivid figurative language. The utilization of these techniques gives the poem a strong meaning and provides the reader with a vivid portrayal of the events that took place during this grisly occurrence Vivid imagery is prevalent all throughout the poem. His tone is of depression, lack of hope and of course sadness and it reveals his message without writing pages of verse.

He accomplishes his message very quickly in the poem, and makes the reader feel like they are actually experiencing what the narrator is going through.
